SCARLET FEVER FROCK FRENZY FOR THE CHINESE NEW YEAR

Hello lovelies, how are you all doing? It's been seriously waaaay too long, I know and I'm sorry. I have to apologize for my absence, not just from blogging but from general interaction with you on your blogs & Twitter too.
I'm not going to digress too much but I'd love to get back onto a more normal blogging schedule without disappearing for months on end but right now I'll be blogging intermittently and sporadically.
I do miss you all, bucket loads in fact... and I will be checking in to say hello & to see what you're all up to - hopefully nothing but fabulous things of course! :)

At the end of this month (how is we're already at the end of Jan already???), we'll be entering the Year of the Horse, I reckon it'll be a good one for all of us! You may recall from my previous posts here and here on CNY that the colour red symbolizes luck. It's a beautiful bold, fiery & daring hue and one with high impact! Don't you just love these gowns for a dramatic entrance into the New Year!

FORTUITOUS RED: CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

Liu Wen Vogue Germany Aug 12

Welcome to Friday lovelies, boy am I glad that there's some to unwind and for me to catch up big time on sleep if possible. I hope you've all had a brilliant week and are all set to enjoy your weekend.

My dear readers, I am beyond excited for the weekend, as my family & I will be celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year on Sunday... The run up is always a great time too, since I get to stuff my face for 3 consecutive days... add Pancake day, Valentines Day, my God Daughters 3rd birthday party and a friends CNY banquet celebration next week, that's like a whole entire week of just eating. Good thing I'm pregnant huh?

I'm also excited, as this year is Mr. Perseus' year and little baby bao's special year - the year of the snake! It's a great year for those who are of water elements... but overall, it will be an interesting year for everybody across the globe since the fire element of the snake clashes with the water energy this lunar year. If you're trying to work out which Chinese horoscope star sign you are & read about superstitions click here.
Right, time to leave you with some images with pops of red, a lucky colour in Chinese Culture.

Hello gorgeous looking cupcakes?! They're probably too pretty to eat. I love these little bites for guests - peanut butter cookies and gold glitter dipped fortune cookies! The red envelopes along with the mandarins are a very popular display in households over the New Year period.

The home is ready and prepped for the big day... what are your weekend plans? Will any of you be popping into Chinatown for the festivities? Whatever you're up to, have a spectacular one loves.

Here's to a fabulous Chinese New Year!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner: Happy CNY!

Today I'm very lucky to have my folks over to be able to celebrate Chinese New Year, this year marking the year of the Dragon (occupying 5th position), the mightiest sign... Boy my brother's lucky, this is the year for him!

In China, the dragon is an imperial symbol, the sign of the emperor's power and wealth. While the second animal which accompany the dragon is the Phoenix which symbolizes luck and happiness. I'll be back with a Chinese Horoscope for some of us once my family have visited the temples in HK.

Seeing Red into the Chinese New Year

I hope you're all having a fantastique week so far!

Tomorrow marks a very important day in the calendar for me and many others as we'll be celebrating Chinese New Year-the year of the rabbit. It's around this time of year that I wish I was with my extended family in Hong Kong, as the city literally bursts with vibrant tones of red, a very lucky colour and gold, which symbolizes wealth and happiness. There are parades galore, a crazed vibrancy in the flower markets and stunning fireworks over Victoria Harbour.

Most visit the temples, one of the more well known temples such as Wong Tai Sin gets rammed on New Years day, there are people running around with joss sticks (incense sticks) lit and there's ash flying everywhere, whilst they rush to make their offerings & pay respect to the Gods. It's quite a sight actually. I only experienced this once when I went with my late Grandmother one year as a teen and I almost got poked in the eye! Scary stuff.

When I was a kid I never understood why Chinese New Year took place on different dates every year until someone explained that this was because the Chinese calendar is based on a combination of the lunar and solar movements, the lunar cycle working to 29.5 days.
Therefore, because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between mid/late January to the mid/late February. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years with
each of the twelve years named after an animal.

In true Chinese legend, it is believed that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."

What year you were born in?

The New Year is a time for family and a frenzy of present giving, usually in the form of small red envelopes containing money, called 'lai see'. This is mainly a tradition where seniors give to juniors or married couple to single friends! I wonder how my newly wed chums are going to deal with this one!

There is usually a sea of superstitions and customs surrounding Chinese New Year, personally I like the wearing of new shoes (slippers) on New Years Day, but first one must kick/walk around the house, so as to ward off bad luck and also step on the people who gossip about you. For more info on customs and traditions click here if you're interested.
Wondering what the year of the Rabbit will mean for us? Check it out here.

So, here's to a fabulous Chinese New Year!
